School Nurse – Middle School
Reports To: School Principal; Superintendent of Schools (program supervision)

Position Objective

 

Provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and fostering a climate of health, safety, and well-being within the school community.

Key Responsibilities

Student Health Services

  • Verify immunizations and physical examinations in compliance with state requirements.
  • Conduct required screenings including vision, hearing, blood pressure, and scoliosis.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date cumulative health records for all students.
  • Authorize exclusion and readmission of students in accordance with Board policy regarding infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care to students and staff in the absence of a physician, following established procedures.
  • Supervise and/or administer specialized health services (e.g., toileting, catheterization, tube feeding) for students with significant medical needs.
  • Select and refer students in need of medical and dental care to appropriate providers.
  • Contact families as necessary regarding student health concerns.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and agencies on school health matters.
  • Develop and implement communication systems to inform families of office visits and medication administration.
  • Advise teachers and staff on student health concerns and needed accommodations.
  • Recommend modifications to educational programs to meet individual student health needs.
  • Participate in developing and implementing the school’s comprehensive health program.
  • Attend committee meetings and conferences related to health services and health curriculum.

Training & Program Support

  • Provide and participate in in-service training (e.g., bloodborne pathogens, Act 51, first aid, CPR, AED use, communicable disease awareness).
  • Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary and safe school conditions.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to the Superintendent and the State Board of Health.
  • Manage and supervise a Health Care Assistant in the practice of nursing, as assigned.

Supervision

 

Reports directly to the School Principal and receives program supervision from the Superintendent of Schools.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

No formal supervisory duties. May train, assist, or direct junior coworkers and support staff as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of relevant nursing experience preferred.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Valid Vermont Educator’s License with a School Nurse (3–65) endorsement.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Vermont.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and public presentation.
  • Basic mathematical skills for medication calculation and data interpretation.
  • Proficiency in student database systems and word processing applications.
  • Strong reasoning skills and the ability to manage multiple health variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students, families, staff, administrators, and outside agencies.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, and use of hands.
  • Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, tasting, or smelling.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and manage stressful situations.

Work Environment

  • Noise level typically moderate.
  • Possible exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases.
